Sarah Barracuda

I am watching the Republican National Convention as we speak. I am watching what I believe to be one of the most genuinely dignified, intelligent, and classy statesmen of our time. Sarah Palin is the whole package, and I believe it has the Democratic Party in the midst and confusion and terror.

I can't help but think of the difference between Republican women and Democrat women. Laura Bush. Sarah Palin. Cindy McCain. Condi Rice. These are women that dignified in every way - how they carry themselves with poise and pride, beautiful yet virtuous, soft-spoken but of an imposing presence. Virtuous women. And then I can't help but contrast my Republican women with those on the other side of the isle. Hillary Rodham Clinton. Theresa Heinz Kerry. Nancy Pelosi. Madeline Albright. Janet Reno. Wolf. These are women that somehow you're just sure have under-arm hair.

I guess the term "grace" and "dignity" best describe for me the Republican women I've mentioned - and many more like them. But make no mistake about it. Sarah Palin is not some quiet little housewife who was plucked out from her tea-party to run for Vice President of the United States. What I am hearing now is the speech of a woman who is vicious, brutal, kick-between-the-legs, red-meat type of woman. She is a fighter, a scrapper. And that makes her all the more wonderful.

I am a political junkie. I live for this stuff. I've been recording presidential debates and party conventions for years. I've never missed a debate or an important speech. And I've watched archive after archive of political speeches going back to the advent of television. Sarah Palin just gave the toughest speech I have ever heard in my entire life. There is no close second. Zell Miller's "spitball" speech in 2004 to the Convention where he afterward challenged Chris Matthews to a duel is a very distant second.

People just don't talk like this. Politicians just don't "go there." We partisans are too worried about the independent vote to fight dirty and rough. Tonight, Palin fought dirty and rough, and no blow was too low. It turns out her nickname in high school, Sarah Barracuda, that she got from being a tough competitor is accurate. It was a speech that no Washington insider would have the guts to give. I am still shaking in excitement that finally someone has verbalized what we're all thinking concerning the absolute insanity of Obama's candidacy. She kicked Obama in the groin over, and over, and over again.

Her attack on Obama came like a rapid-fire Gatling gun of death. It came like fire and brimstone, like death from above. God help anyone who gets in the way of Sarah Palin.

I quickly jotted down some of her more memorable comments.

"The Democratic nominee has authored two memoirs, but not a single law."

"I've got a news flash for those reporters and commentators... I'm not going to Washington to seek your good opinion."

"Being a mayor is sort of like being a community organizer, except it has actual responsibilities."

"Obama never use term victory, unless it's concerning his own campaign."

" ...and they'll have to take those Styrofoam Greek columns back to a Hollywood studio somewhere."

" What's he going to do after turning back the waters and healing the planet?"

"He's not worried about terrorists, but only worried that someone won't read them their rights."

"Our opponent uses change to promote his career, John S. McCain has used his career to promote change."

"John McCain isn't looking for a fight, but isn't afraid of one either."

" I'm from a small town, but I guess that doesn't earn me much respect from someone who thinks we cling to our guns and religion."

"The presidency not supposed to be a lesson in personal discovery."

" As much as Obama and Biden talk about fighting for you, in reality only one man has ever really fought for you...John McCain."

Afterward Palin's historic speech - the best most of us have ever or will ever hear - McCain came out and told the crowd "I think we've chosen the right candidate." Well, McCain, I think you're right. Well done.

Tonight, I am a proud Republican. I am a proud Republican for the first time in years. I called a friend after the Convention tonight to talk about the speech. She was in tears. She and her husband were excited because they thought that there weren't any patriots left in America. Well, we've got a couple on our Republican ticket...Senator John McCain and Sarah Barracuda.

After two months of apathy and frustration, I finally have reasons to give a crap. Even the old former candidates gave me reasons to shout with glee instead of disgust. Rudy burned on Obama almost as much as Palin. In fact, after hearing Rudy, I was afraid that Palin would lay off Obama. Boy was I wrong.

Not only has Palin's nomination energized the base (including me), but McCain is absolutely more energized. All I have to say that this is where the fun begins.
